MONROE - A man threatening to harm himself held police in a standoff for at least five hours Wednesday, Oct. 9.
The Monroe Police Department received a report at 5:40 p.m. Wednesday of a 32-year-old man threatening to use a firearm at his residence in the 600 block of 19th Avenue.
Police Chief Fred Kelley, who described the man as despondent, said police were attempting to reason with the man by telephone. As of 11 p.m., the case was still active, Kelley said.
Kelley said the man, who was the lone occupant of the house, was only threatening to harm himself and posed "no threat to the general public."
As a precaution, police notified neighbors shortly after 8 p.m. to stay in their homes.
