MONROE - As part of its on-going program of professional theatre skills training, The Monroe Theatre Guild will be offering "The Physical Actor" workshop on Saturday, April 4, at the MTG building, 910 16th Avenue. The class will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with a half-hour lunch break.
This class is for the serious performer who wants to learn more professional acting techniques, and who has already been on stage in at least three productions of plays, dance, mime, or related performance work.
The class will begin with physical preparations and warm-ups geared specifically to the professional actor in pre-performance. Acting techniques will include how to create a believable character using physical adjustments, exploration of physical centers, sense memories, personal transference, and pre-entrance physical life; how character wardrobe and historical attire shapes the physical life of the character; and how the physical and emotional life of the character is intertwined. Basic scene work with a partner will allow the actor to explore some of these skills in action.
The class is being taught by Katee and Stephen Eliasson. Katee graduated with an MFA in acting from Milliken University in Illinois, and ran the Open Door Theatre Company in Chicago. Her 17-school theatre project earned her the personal praise of Mayor Daley. She has extensive performance experience, including stage combat, and has worked on physically demanding roles such as Annie Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker" at the Northlight Theatre in Wilmette under the direction of Steve Smith, who is now Chairman of the BFA Acting Program at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She has also spent many years teaching theatre skills in Youth Programs.
Stephen graduated with an Acting Concentration from the Theatre Program at Skidmore College in upstate New York. He studied acting at the Terry Schreiber Studio in NYC, as well as commercial acting, pantomime, aikido, kempo, fencing, and certified Advanced Actor/Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors. He has performed in regional theatre, commercials, industrials, and toured as a performer in both the U.S. and in European theatre festivals. He has choreographed swordfights and physical violence for over 30 productions, and taught at the university and conservatory level.
Participants should come ready for class in workout clothes or clothing they can move comfortably in. Be prepared to remove loose jewelry such as necklaces and earrings.
Class size is limited to 10 people, and there are only a few spaces still available. The cost of the workshop is $30 for non-MTG members, $25 for MTG members. For more information, contact Suzanne Miller at 558-3816.
