St. John's to celebrate 150th anniv.

MONROE - St. John's United Church of Christ will celebrate its 150th anniversary beginning with a hymn sing Saturday, Aug. 25 and ending with an all-church picnic celebration on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Deb Krauss Smith will present "Mostly American: Great Hymns of the 19th Century" - a one-hour program of familiar hymns with commentary - at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John's sanctuary, 1724 14th St. Krauss Smith is organist and director of music at the church and presented the program earlier in the year at the Overture Center, Madison, as well as in Beloit. The public is invited to this event.

Events on Sunday include worship at 8 and 9 a.m. at St. John's and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clare Friedensheim. Following the 9 a.m. service, a group picture will be taken in front of the church and 150 balloons with the prayers, hopes and dreams for the next 150 years will be released.

The activities will then move to the SLICE arena, 1632 4th Ave. West, where a potluck dinner will be held followed by a short program. Past clergy and support staff have been invited to attend and will be recognized. Music will be provided by The Has Beens and The Jimmys. Games and prizes are planned for children.
