MONROE - The northeast and northwest intersections of 10th Street in downtown Monroe are open and traffic is flowing again.

Streetscape construction equipment has turned the corner and moved south along 16th Avenue.

According to Tom Purdy, community development specialist with Fehr-Graham and Associates, the southwest corner, at 11th Street and 16th Avenue, will be re-opened Oct. 5.

Construction workers were working Friday on sidewalks and preparing forms for concrete crosswalks in that area. Asphalt is scheduled to be laid for the streets to the south and west of the intersection late next week.

"(E & N) Hughes is working hard to reach the southeast corner," Purdy said. "And a second crew will be put on to finish the (Spring Square) alley."

The goal is to have the outer ring of the downtown Square finished by the end of October, Purdy said.

With two to three weeks needed for the inner ring work, construction would not be finished until Thanksgiving, he said.

The inner ring construction will be done this year depending upon the weather.

E & N Hughes will not tear up the inner ring unless contractors can pour concrete.

"The temperature has to be 40 degrees and rising," Purdy said.
