MONROE - Monroe will celebrate the re-opening of the Square Saturday with the Square Affair on 10th Street downtown.

After a construction make-over last year, the Square has new pavement, sidewalks, lighting, trees and drinking fountains, and won the 2009 Wisconsin Main Street Best Public Improvement: Built Environment award this April.

The celebration event, planned by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, kicks off at 4 p.m. with table decorating and children activities and touring the Square and the newly remolded interior Green County Courthouse. Tours of the courthouse are from 4-6 p.m.

Dinner starts at 5 p.m. along with the big band music of the "Brian Whitty Band." People can bring a picnic meal or purchase a box lunch from Cafe Claudeen, Chopsticks, Garden Deli, Pancho & Lefty's or Turner Hall.

A ribbon-cutting and dedication, as well as a cupcake toast, will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by the judging of tables decorated in the style of participants' favorite eras at 7 p.m. Table winners receive Monroe Money.

Those attending can rock on from 8 to 10 p.m. with "Stranded in Iowa" playing music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

A 1,200-square foot beer and wine garden will be roped off near the middle of the 1600 block of 10th street.

Sponsors of the event include Fehr-Graham and Associates, E & N Hughes, Glanbia Nutritions, Radio Shack, Crossroads Community Church and Boomerang Bakery.

Tables for parties of up to eight people can be reserved for $30 on a first-come, first-served basis through the Chamber by calling 325-7648.
