TOWN OF NEW GLARUS/YORK - Residents with private wells in the Towns of New Glarus and York interested in learning more about the quality of their water can have their well-water tested at a reduced cost and learn of the results during an educational program with drinking water experts.

This program is completely voluntary, but groundwater specialists strongly encourage rural residents to test their water at least once every two years. Those who participate will receive the results of their water tests during an educational program in June. Results will be kept confidential.

There are various options for well-water testing.

The Homeowner Package includes tests for nitrate, coliform bacteria, pH, alkalinity, hardness, conductivity, corrosivity and chloride for $42.

The Metals Package tests for copper, lead, iron, manganese, zinc, potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium for $42.

The Triazine Screen includes tests for triazine type pesticides like atrazine for $27.

Participants may choose one or more of the testing packages described above or have all three packages for $110.

Special bottles for the water testing program will be available:

- At New Glarus Town Hall, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, June 1 or 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

- At York Town Hall, from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, June 1 or from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 2.

Those who do not live in the Towns of New Glarus or York can pick up sample bottles between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1 at the UW-Extension Office. Tests must be paid for when bottles are picked up, and bottles must be filled and returned on Monday, June 4, to the site where bottles were picked up.

Results will be available Thursday, June 28, during a 90-minute educational seminar presented at 6:30 p.m. at the New Glarus Town Hall. Everyone will have the opportunity to ask questions, and results will be kept confidential. If there are problems with your water, you will be notified by mail within two weeks of your sample date. If you are unable to attend the program to obtain your complete results, they will be mailed to you.
