TOWN OF DARLINGTON - A South Wayne man is facing his fifth drunk driving charge after he crashed his car Saturday night near Darlington.

Stephen D. Sporle, 42, was arrested in June in Iowa County on a fourth-offense charge of operating while intoxicated (OWI) and released on a $3,000 signature bond. The case is still pending.

On Saturday, Lafayette County deputies arrested him again for OWI and for driving with a revoked license. He was jailed and has an adjourned initial appearance Aug. 31 in Lafayette County Circuit Court on the Class H felony OWI charge. If convicted, he could be imprisoned up to three years and put on extended supervision another three years.

Sporle was eastbound on Red Rock Road around 9:50 p.m. Saturday when he lost control on a curve, went off the road and hit multiple trees, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department. His 1998 Honda Accord was towed from the scene.

Sporle was also cited for failure to control a motor vehicle, tampering with or failing to install his court-ordered ignition interlock device, driving with a revoked or suspended registration, having open intoxicants in the vehicle and driving without vehicle insurance.

According to court records, Sporle has OWI convictions from March 2010 in Iowa County, February 2012 in Grant County and November 2012 in Iowa County.
