MONROE — Two snowmobilers from Illinois were arrested for drunken driving after officers investigated a rollover crash in Monticello Wednesday night, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office.
James H. Knowlton, 59, Dixon, and Terry A. Simons, 54, McConnell, are each charged with operating a snowmobile while under the influence of alcohol. They were both also cited for refusing to take a test for intoxication.
Simons has at least one prior OWI, from 2005 in Stephenson County, Illinois, according to court records.
The snowmobile rollover was reported at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of South Main Street in Monticello. The snowmobilers had fled the scene but were later observed traveling northbound on Wisconsin 69 toward New Glarus.
Knowlton was located first and apprehended.
“Knowlton was identified as the operator who had lost control of his snowmobile,” Sgt. Allen Peters wrote in a release. Knowlton was released pending court and taken by New Glarus EMS to the Monroe Clinic ER for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
After a search of the area, Simons was located in the parking lot of a business in the 600 block of Wis. 69 in New Glarus. He was evaluated by EMS, then released pending court.
Both men were wearing helmets and their snowmobiles were undamaged. New Glarus police assisted deputies in the investigation.
