MONROE - The Monroe School District will likely have to add on days at the end of the school year, but the date for the last day of school hasn't been determined yet.
"We will likely have some days added on at the end of the year," Monroe School District Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner said. "We will wait until we get through the winter months to make that determination."
So far, the district has had five snow/cold weather days when it canceled school. The last day of school was first set for Thursday, June 5, with Friday, June 6 through Wednesday, June 11 tentatively set as snow make-up days. However, that could change before winter is over.
"We will wait until probably mid-March to determine how to make up the days for this year so we have more concrete numbers to work with," Hirsbrunner said. "The good news is we have a calendar this year that has 182 student contact days built in, so considering the winter weather this year, this is a positive."
State law requires public schools be in session 180 days per year. Of those up, to five days may be used for parent-teacher conference or inclement weather, provided the required number of instructional hours is met.
"We will continue to monitor the calendar and the inclement weather days and will get communication to families as early as possible once we are through January and February," she said.
Students in the district are expected to return to school today, Jan. 29 after a two-day cold spell that canceled school. The district has had four snow and cold days in January and one in December.
The Monroe school board also canceled its meeting for Monday, Jan. 27 because of the extreme cold weather. The next school board meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 10.
