MONROE - In the end, it all came down to the Louisiana Purchase.
Jenny Thorngate, a 2002 Monroe High School graduate, survived her first day on "Jeopardy" Wednesday, coming from behind to take the lead and win $22,001 on the popular TV quiz show.
Thorngate beat out Sawyer Morgan, the returning one-day champ who won $11,590 the day before, and Ian Bourland, a challenger from Baltimore.
After the first round, Thorngate was trailing by a considerable margin, but she hung on to close the gap. She bet $3,000 on the final Daily Double in the "Name-Dropping Song Lyric" category, the last clue on the board, and had the correct answer to the question: "Pink complained, "tired of being compared to damn' this blonde singer; "She so pretty, that just ain't me.'" (Who is Britney Spears?)
It put her in the lead, with $14,800, compared to Morgan's $11,000 and Bourland's $10,400.
Each contestant answered correctly the Final Jeopardy question: "Of this agreement, Thomas Jefferson said he "stretched the Constitution until it cracked.'" (What is the Louisiana Purchase?)
Bourland bet it all, increasing his total
to $20,800.
Morgan bet $10,900, to reach $21,900.
And Thorngate wagered $7,201, winning the nail-biter by just $101.
Thorngate, 31, is a graduate of University of Chicago and works in the inorganic chemistry department at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. She taped the episode in April. In an interview with The Monroe Times recently, she said she wasn't allowed to disclose how she did on the show.
Thorngate's second day on "Jeopardy" airs at 4:30 p.m. today on WMTV.
