MONROE - "If it ain't Sloppy Joe, it ain't Slopgrass," is the motto by the four-member band Sloppy Joe. Billed as authentic, new-style, homegrown "slopgrass" music from the heart of Wisconsin, Sloppy Joe will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at the Monroe Arts Center.

Every Sloppy Joe performance draws deeply on original songs. Their material is frequently recombined with jug-band instrumentation, while band-members swap the guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and bass around the stage. One observer claimed to see the upright bass change players three times in one song.

The members of Sloppy Joe are Gavin Schaberg (vocals, banjo, guitar, mandolin); Jeff Sachs (vocals, upright bass, fiddle, banjo, guitar, jug, mandolin); Stef Lee (vocals, guitar, upright bass, fiddle, banjo, musical saw); and Jimers Soukup (washtub, upright basses, jawharp). Soukup has been with Sloppy Joe ever since first performing with them at the 18th Annual Minnesota Jug-band Competition. His homemade wash-tub bass gives the band its authentic booming jug-band sound. As a promoter of local, grass-roots music, his vision for spreading music has led him to playing many of the newest Sloppy Joe arrangements on the upright bass.

Sloppy Joe has shared the bill with a variety of great acts including the late John Hartford, The Del McCoury Band, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Leftover Salmon, Danny Barnes, Michael Hurley, Piper Road Spring Band, Rev. Jeff Mosier, Vassar Clements, and Hayseed Dixie. They have performed various Wisconsin festivals including Jackpine Jamboree, and Swamp-n-Grass, as well as Florida's Suwannee Springfest, Magnoliafest, and Kentucky's Poppy Mountain Festival.

Reserved seat tickets for Sloppy Joe are $25, $20, and $10 for students 18 years of age and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling MAC (608) 325-5700 or (888) 596-1249, in person at the box office located at 1315 11th St., or online at www.monroeartscenter.com.
