Slight dips in jobless rates in Green, Lafayette

MONROE - Both Green and Lafayette counties experienced slight drops in unemployment in July, according to the state Department of Workforce Development.

Green County's unemployment rate improved from 9.4 percent in June to 9.2 percent in July. In Lafayette County, the rate also decreased slightly, from 7.5 percent in June to 7.4 percent in July.

Though Green and Lafayette counties' unemployment rates improved minimally, both figures are significantly worse than in July 2008. Green County's rate was 4.1 percent at this time last year, while Lafayette County had a rate of 3.9 percent.

Green County has the 28th highest rate out of 72 counties, up from 34th in June. Lafayette County is 62nd on the list, up six spots from 68 in June. Menominee County ranks first in the county rankings with an unemployment rate of 18.2 percent, while Dane County had the lowest percentage of 5.9.

Beloit and Racine continue to have the highest unemployment among Wisconsin cities.

The state Department of Workforce Development reported Wednesday that Beloit still leads the state with 17.6 percent unemployment in July. That was down from 18.6 the previous month, but far higher than a year ago, when it was 8.3 percent.

Racine was second highest at 17.1 percent, up slightly from the 16.6 percent in June. A year ago, unemployment there was 9.1 percent.

Statewide, the unemployment rate in July was 8.7 percent.

Of the state's 72 counties, unemployment rates improved in 67, worsened in three and stayed unchanged in two.
