MONROE - Residents across the area woke up this morning to something they weren't looking for seeing - a substantial amount of snow on the ground.
About 3.5 inches of snow fell in Monroe, according to the Monroe Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The first measurable snowfall to hit Green and Lafayette counties Sunday through Monday morning and windy conditions made traveling difficult.
Green County Highway Commissioner Dallas Cecil said state roads and county roads still were snow-covered at 7:30 a.m. today and he expected crews to be out all day. Road crews were out on state highways at 4 a.m. and on county roads at 5 a.m., he said.
The wind made it difficult for snowplow drivers to clear the roads.
"It's hard to keep (the roads) clear with the wind blowing. They drift over and you have to keep going back over them," Cecil said. "I guess it's always something."
The Green County Sheriff's Department reported 11 vehicles slid off the road due to the ice and snow.
There were two crashes due to the weather, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department.
Injuries were reported following a two-vehicle accident at about 6:15 a.m. Monday at Wisconsin 69 near County P, according to Sheriff Randy Roderick. One of the two cars involved was towed from the scene. No further information was available.
No one was injured in a one-vehicle accident at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday in the W400 block of Wis. 11 in Decatur township. Deputies report a vehicle driven by Macy K. Trumble, 22, Brodhead, left the road, spun around and slid into the ditch, hitting some trees. The vehicle received moderate damage and was driven from the scene.
Lafayette County Chief Deputy John Reichling said there was one rollover accident on Wis. 81 west of Argyle due to the weather. No one was injured in the accident. Three slide-offs also were reported throughout the county, he added.
Reichling said drivers need to remember to drive slowly, brake early and leave earlier for their destinations when it snows. People sometimes forget how to drive in snow and they need to be reminded, he added.
Two area schools, Pecatonica and Black Hawk, were delayed two hours due to the snow.
According to the National Weather Service, another half inch of snow was expected throughout the day. More snow is expected after midnight Tuesday, with 3 to 5 inches of accumulation Wednesday.
