MONROE - A Monroe man faces charges of dealing narcotics after drug agents executed a search warrant Thursday afternoon on his home in the 1200 block of 23rd Street, according to Monroe police.
Dustin W. Smith, 32, was jailed on charges of possessing heroin with intent to deliver, possessing a controlled substance without a prescription, possessing drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. He was also arrested on a warrant, issued the same day in Green County Circuit Court, for a Class F felony charge of delivering heroin on Nov. 13.
The search warrant was the result of a longterm heroin-trafficking investigation by agents with the Stateline Area Narcotics Team (SLANT), a collaboration between area law enforcement agencies.
Green County deputies and K-9 unit and Monroe police officers assisted SLANT agents in searching the house on 23rd Street at about 5 p.m. Thursday. The search turned up suspected heroin, paraphernalia and Suboxone, a prescription medication for opiate withdrawal that has a high risk for addiction.
Smith was not home at the time of the search. When police went to the local business where he works, he fled on foot. A search of the area led to his arrest in the 200 block of 4th Avenue. He was jailed pending court.
Smith was living in the house with family, according to Chief of Police Fred Kelley. But Kelley doesn't anticipate charges against anyone else living in the home.
"I don't think they had any idea what was going on," Kelley said. "This was not a drug house."
Court records show Smith has convictions going back to 2003 in Green County for retail theft, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, trespassing, bail jumping and resisting or obstructing an officer.
