MONROE - There will be a new sheriff in town as of Monday.

Jeff Skatrud, who has served as Green County Chief Deputy since 2002, was elected in November to a four-year term as sheriff. Skatrud decided to run for the position after Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick decided not to seek another term.

Skatrud was unopposed in the election.

"I think it shows people are happy with the way the department has been run," Skatrud said.

Still, Skatrud said he was a little hesitant about running for office.

"If I could have filled out an application or taken a test that would have been better," he said.

Skatrud said he has talked to Roderick and it's helped make the transition process a little easier.

There aren't any major changes planned for the department, Skatrud said. Lt. Richard Wyttenbach will be promoted to the chief deputy position.

Skatrud joined the Green County Sheriff's Department in 1981 as a patrol deputy, after starting his career as a Shullsburg police officer in 1979. In his 29 years with the sheriff's department, Skatrud has also been a patrol sergeant, drug detective, lieutenant and the county's first DARE officer.

Skatrud lives in rural Brodhead with his wife Lynn, and has two adult sons, Josh and Kevin.
