Skate park plans jump forward

MONROE - Honey Creek Skate Park may soon be getting a new look.

Monroe Area Skating Enthusiasts (MASE) representative, Tom Miller, returned to the City of Monroe Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners Wednesday night to present the group's latest request for purchasing park equipment for Phase II of Honey Creek Skate Park.

The group has asked to keep on order the center section, which includes four small pieces: the fun box, stairs, handrails and planters. The group says it also needs to keep on order a quarter pipe, ramp and hip section.

By moving the present 10 pieces and incorporating the new pieces, Miller said the new skate park will be in a "L" shape for the time being.

The group has about $47,000, but its funds are still $5,000 short for the requested equipment. Miller said they are waiting to see what the Finance and Taxation Committee will say April 2 about ordering the equipment.

Miller said a discount can be gained for self-installation, with the equipment company overseeing the process. That decision is up to the committee.

If the committee approves the purchases, the equipment will arrive in about 60 days, Miller said.

Miller said the other sections they had wanted to get this year - a large section of quarter pipes and a hip for the fourth corner - would take another $30,000.

MASE will continue to promote the park, working to raise money and looking for tax-deductible donations to the Monroe Fund in the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin.
