MADISON - The Black Hawk Lady Warriors lost to Wausau Newman in the WIAA Division 4 state championship, 64-30, Saturday.

It was the last game for seniors Kim Wellnitz, Katie Place and Brooke Ritschard.

"Playing with all of these girls one last time, it's heartbreaking, but you love this team and you'll always remember this - being runners-up at state," Wellnitz said, who has been on varsity since her freshman year. "Not many teams have this chance. I'm going to miss it tremendously."

Place was sad to see it end, but at the pep rally at Black Hawk High School after the game, she told head coach Mike Flanagan, "for the first time I can actually say that I am satisfied."

The team's motto this year was "never be satisfied," but after the game, Flanagan was more than proud of his seniors and his team.

"Not a lot of teams get to play in this game. We wanted to play as far into the season as we possibly could, and we did that," he said.

Melissa Wellnitz, a junior and Kim's younger sister, was emotional after the game, knowing that she would never play with her sister and Katie again.

"I couldn't have asked for a better place to play with them. It's indescribable," Melissa said.
