MONROE - When the Wisconsin Singers come to Monroe on Friday, May 4, it may be the last chance for many people to catch a local brother and sister performing together on stage.
Alex and Abby Kennison will be back home, stepping onto the stage of the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center as members of the Wisconsin Singers hosting a benefit for Family Promise of Green County at 7 p.m.
"Coming back to Monroe is like going back to the first time and our experiences together," Abby said.
While Abby, 20, has been dancing and singing since childhood, Alex, 22, didn't catch the performing bug until he was a senior at Monroe High School, when both had a part in the school production of "Footloose."
"The experience showed me how much I enjoyed performing on stage and in front of an audience," he said. "I fell in love with it."
"He may have gotten a late start," Abby said, "but he's really bloomed."
The siblings appeared together again when the Wisconsin Singers came to Monroe last year, and they are excited to be returning.
"It's an opportunity to show the community what we've been doing," Alex said.
Alex captured one of the 16 performer spots in the Wisconsin Singers when he entered the University of Wisconsin, and Abby took another two years later. Performers must audition each year to be part of the university's professional entertainment company.
The Wisconsin Singers will be performing "Starstruck," a 70-minute performance packed with 50 years of music and professionally choreographed dance.
Alex said "Starstruck," with songs ranging from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga and the movie "Lion King," will have something for everyone's interest.
"One song leads into the next, and it's constant action," he added.
The Kennison siblings will be performing together in Monroe perhaps for the last time. Alex graduates this spring, with a goal to continue his studies in psychology counseling or marriage and family therapy. Abby is majoring in history and legal studies, with plans to continue at the UW School of Law, but she said she will always be involved with music.
