DARLINGTON - A Shullsburg man was sentenced to three years on probation in two separate cases involving theft.
Chad D. Knauer, 32, pleaded no contest to theft of property with a value greater than $5,000, a Class H felony. He received an imposed and stayed sentence of one year in jail only to be used if he violates his conditions of probation.
The case stems from an incident on May 23. The criminal complaint indicates that Knauer, along with Scot M. Meneguin, 31, Argyle, and Michael J. Thompson, 27, Hazel Green, stole a 2015 Kymco Can-Am UTV worth $5,500 from Mike's Engine Works in Darlington.
Both Meneguin and Thompson pleaded guilty in July to theft of property greater than $2,500, a misdemeanor, and received a withheld sentence of one year on probation as they undergo alcohol and drug abuse treatment.
In a separate case stemming from an investigation the same day, May 23, Knauer also pleaded no contest to a Class I felony charge of receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of altering identity marks. He was given an imposed and stayed sentence of one year in jail for the felony conviction and nine months in jail for the misdemeanor conviction.
According to the criminal complaint, Shullsburg police received an anonymous tip that Knauer was in possession of a stolen lawnmower and snowmobile trailer. A search of his residence turned up a John Deere Model X475 lawnmower belonging to CGM Small Engine Repair and Sales in Monroe and a snowmobile trailer belonging to M. Schettl Sales Inc. in Oshkosh. Knauer told police he and Andrew J. Turpin, 21, Darlington, stole both items earlier in the year.
Turpin is charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and two counts of altering identity marks, along with five Class H felony counts of forgery. The case is still open, and he has a status conference Monday.
Knauer is ordered to pay restitution to M. Schettl Sales Inc. in the amount of $200, along with court costs.
