DARLINGTON - A Shullsburg man pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of sexually assaulting a child.
Jose David Ortiz-Segundo, 27, entered not guilty pleas on a Class B felony count of first-degree sexual assault of a child and a related Class C felony at a preliminary hearing Thursday.
Ortiz-Segundo was charged in March based on the report of a prepubescent girl who said he sucked on her neck, causing visible bruises, at a Shullsburg residence on Oct. 1, 2016.
Since that incident, the child said Ortiz-Segundo groped her on multiple occasions until mid-February of this year.
Ortiz-Segundo waived his preliminary hearing, so Lafayette County Circuit Judge Duane Jorgenson set the case over for trial.
Ortiz-Segundo's attorney, Jason Gonzalez, filed a motion to reduce Ortiz-Segundo's bond from $5,000 to $1,000 based on his client's lack of a criminal record.
Jorgenson accepted the motion. Ortiz-Segundo paid the bond immediately after the hearing, although he is not permitted to have any contact with the girl, her family or her residence and will reside in Cuba City.
Lafayette County District Attorney Jenna Gill said Ortiz-Segundo currently has a pending immigration hold.
Ortiz-Segundo's next court appearance will be a status conference scheduled for July 12. His maximum possible sentence is 65 years in prison.
