MONROE - A talent show planned for Saturday, Oct. 13 will benefit the Monroe Shop with a Cop program.
The talent show will be from 7 p.m. to midnight at Leisure Lanes in Monroe. Any type of entertainment is encouraged and there will be a panel of judges. Pre-registration will guarantee a performance time slot, but entertainers can also sign up at the event.
Admission to participate in the show is $15, with a chance to win cash prizes. There is no charge for spectators, but donations for the Shop with a Cop program will be collected.
The talent show event will also include a 50-50 raffle and door prizes. Donated raffle or door prize items can be dropped off at Leisure Lanes. Donations will also be collected for the Green County Humane Society.
The Shop with a Cop program began in 2002 with the assistance of Chief Robert Levitt, Albany, and Chief Steven Allbaugh, retired, New Glarus police. The goal is to strengthen the ties between law enforcement and the community by helping children in need. To date, the program has served 179 children.
For the Shop with a Cop event, children, usually between 4 and 12, accompany an officer to Walmart. Children can spend up to $100 in the shopping trip for items for themselves or their family members. Children are selected from recommendations provided by area schools and churches.
The Monroe Police Department will accompany 24 children on this year's shopping trip, scheduled for Dec. 8. The program raises funds and collects donations to make the shopping trip possible.
