SOUTH WAYNE - The investigation into a bomb threat Monday at Black Hawk school in South Wayne continues.

Superintendent Willy Chambers said the school district is assisting the sheriff's department in the process of their investigation.

Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley said he could not release details about specific aspects of cases during an on-going criminal investigation.

"In this case, I can confirm for you that this is being dealt with as a felony investigation, and the investigation is continuing," Pedley said Thursday.

School officials evacuated Black Hawk School buildings in South Wayne following the discovery of a written bomb threat Monday morning.

Chambers was notified about the bomb threat at about 8:30 a.m. by Jerry Mortimer, principal at the school. Chambers was at the middle school in Gratiot at the time.

About 270 high school and elementary students were evacuated in less than five minutes to a nearby Catholic church, about one block from the school, and public safety and law enforcement personnel were called to the school.

No explosive devices, suspicious materials or other dangerous materials were found on the school property. Fire, law enforcement and school officials searched the buildings, including bathrooms, lockers and the ceilings, and all staff-owned vehicles, well as students' vehicles on the property, for three hours.

No suspects were identified, according to Chambers.

Students returned to classes at about 12:30 p.m.

The district sent a letter home with students Monday informing parents of the event and asking for any information they may have regarding the threat.
