MONROE - Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud will be retiring from his position Sept. 2.
Skatrud joined the department in 1981 as a patrol deputy, after starting his career as a Shullsburg police officer in 1979. He became chief deputy in 2002 and was elected in November 2010 to a four-year term as sheriff, taking over after Randy Roderick decided not to seek another term.
Skatrud is leaving his term early to pursue other opportunities. "My intentions have always been to complete this term and then explore other career opportunities for the remainder of my working years," he wrote in an announcement Wednesday, July 31.
"My plans now are to pursue opportunities that I do not anticipate will be available at the end of this term. I wish the timing was a little better but feel that this decision is best for my family and myself at this stage of my life."
While he declined to specify what these opportunities are, he did say, "I hope to get back into teaching again. I miss it and hope to do that again."
He said it's an honor to wrap up his law enforcement career with the Green County Sheriff's Department.
"I have worked here for basically my entire adult life. I have raised my children in Green County. It is a wonderful place to work and live. I have confidence that we're leaving the department in good hands," he wrote.
