Sheriff: Limited seating for 5/9 meeting
Green County Board
MONROE - Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud issued a noticed for tomorrow's (5/9) county board meeting.
"The Green County Board of Supervisors meeting has an agenda item that has garnered considerable public interest and it is anticipated that the county board room will be filled," he said.
The seating capacity for observers in the county board room at the Historic Courthouse is 140, Skatrud said, and for the safety of those in attendance that number will be strictly enforced.
"There is no public comment on that agenda item and we would encourage interested community members go to greencountywi.org and follow the listed Zoom link to listen to the meeting virtually," Skatrud said.
The agenda item in question is a resolution that would designate June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in Green County.
The Green County Human Services Board submitted the following letter to the Green County Board of Supervisors:
In the estimation of the Chair of the Human Services Board (HSB), and the majority of its members, as well as the opinion of the Human Services Director (attachment 1), the proposed Resolution is appropriate for action by the HSB, and the full County Board, as part of the Human Services official mandate to support and assist county residents at risk of or experiencing abuse or mental health issues.
The Child Welfare Services, Children's Long Term Support Services, Comprehensive Community Services and Mental Health Treatment department are all under the Human Services umbrella, squarely covering children and mental health in Green County. Discrimination and harassment of the LGBTQIA+ community negatively impact the mental health of a large percentage of County youth, as illustrated by the research findings of Ms. Stephanie Hormig (attachment 2).
Testimony provided at the HSB meeting of April 18, 2023 illustrated that support for the LGBTQIA+ community in Green County is critically needed for the affirmation of youth experiencing mental health challenges resulting from discrimination and harassment due to their membership in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Establishing a Pride Month is a first step toward creating a safe and welcoming community for all, and has been used in communities throughout America and many cities around the world. Similar resolutions have already been adopted in other rural Wisconsin counties, including Richland and Winnebago.

Supervisors Sheaffer, Carus, Pennington and Nelson proposed the Resolution to the HSB, which treated the matter at its meeting of April 18, 2023. The HSB voted 7 members in favor of the Resolution and 1 member opposed to the Resolution.
