NEW GLARUS - The man who stabbed two Dane County Sheriff's deputies Thursday in the Town of Primrose and was later fatally shot suffered from mental illness, Sheriff Dave Mahoney said Friday.

The man, whose name has not been released, attacked his mother and stepfather before deputies arrived at the residence at 233 Hanna Road where the man was living.

Mahoney said the sheriff's department had interacted with the man on several occasions for many years. The assailant was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he stabbed Lt. Brian Hayes and deputy Roger Finch in their legs.

The deputies attempted to subdue the man - who had long suffered from schizophrenia - by firing bean bags, tasers, pepper spray and using batons. A third deputy, James Kelley, fired a single shot that hit the man in the shoulder. The attacker later died from his wound at the scene.

Jaime Baker, a neighbor who lives northeast of the residence, said she did not know the victims well because they had only moved to their home on Primrose Center Road in 2008. Baker, who serves as clerk for the Town of Primrose, said the incident is very unusual.

"It's kind of surreal," Baker said. "You never expect to see this happen all the way out here, then all of a sudden you see Primrose everywhere."

Property records show the brown, rotund residence has been owned by Rosemary and Robert Hansen for the past 15 years. The parents of the attacker suffered serious head injuries and were transported to a Madison area hospital by EMS. The Wisconsin State Journal reported the two were able to speak with investigators, but their health is still unknown.

The injured deputies were transported Thursday to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison via Medflight. Deputy Finch was released Friday, but Hayes had to undergo surgery and will remain hospitalized for a few more days, Mahoney said. Kelley is on administrative leave.

Sun Prairie Police Department, Madison Police Department, Fitchburg Police Department and UW Police Department will lead an investigation into Kelley's actions. Mahoney said the Dane County Sheriff's office has been complying with a recent law change that requires an outside agency to conduct investigations into the use of lethal force.
