MONROE - A Brodhead man will be sentenced next month for killing one of his sons, then face a jury trial for injuring another.
Casey J. Shelton, 33, will be sentenced Aug. 24 in Green County Circuit Court for first-degree reckless homicide in the death of his 2-month-old son, Christopher, at a Decatur township residence Feb. 28, 2007. Shelton was convicted Jan. 17, and faces up to 40 years in prison and 20 years extended supervision.
His sentencing has been delayed so his new attorney, Katherine Findley, could get all of the transcripts from Shelton's trial. Findlay told Green County Circuit Court Judge James Beer on Friday she was ready for the setencing hearing. Shelton remains in the Green County Jail.
Shelton also will stand trial for charges related to injuries suffered by Christopher's twin brother, Charles. Beer on Friday scheduled a five-day trial to start Nov. 30. Twelve jurors and two alternates will hear the case.
Green County Assistant District Attorney Jeff Kohl and Findley will put together a questionnaire for potential jurors. Each attorney can remove six people from the jury pool.
Shelton is charged with two counts of child abuse, one a class G felony and the other a class H felony. He faces up to 16 years in prison and up to $25,000, if convicted.
