MONROE - Monroe Arts Center will host Maestro Andrew Sewell and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra to the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall with an inaugural concert celebrating the grand opening of the MAC's new building addition.

The WCO will perform various musical works by Edvard Grieg, J.S. Bach, Arcangelo Corelli, Vittorio Giannini and Paul Lewis.

Sewell is serving his 17th season as music director of the WCO. During his tenure, Sewell has expanded the orchestra's repertoire and provided innovative programming to concerts.

His previous appointments include music director with Wichita Symphony (2000-2010), Ohio's Mansfield Symphony (1997-2002) and resident conductor of Toledo Symphony (1995-2000).

A native of New Zealand, Sewell received his music training on the violin, piano and cornet, and began conducting at age 16. Six years later, he made his professional opera debut with the Mercury Opera and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Winning the Australian Guarantee Corporation's Young Achiever's Award allowed him to further his studies abroad. Sewell holds a Master of Music degree with honors in conducting from the University of Michigan.

Sewell is in demand as a conductor having led the Toronto, Detroit, Milwaukee, Columbus, Toledo, Syracuse, Illinois, Monterey, Gulf Coast and Eugene Symphony Orchestras, as well as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Christchurch Symphony, National Symphony of Mexico, Kyushu Symphony (Japan), City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and Hong Kong City Opera, OK Mozart Festival, Peninsula Music Festival and Masterworks Festival.

Prior to the concert, the public is invited to attend the 6:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting grand opening ceremony and free reception. After the concert, a ticketed champagne and dessert reception will take place in the promenade of the new building.

Reserved seat prime concert tickets for the orchestra are $25; tickets for the champagne and dessert reception are $15. Tickets are available online at monroeartscenter.com, by phone at 608-325-5700 or in person at the MAC box office.
