Search of school 'went well'

MONROE - The Monroe school district conducted a routine security check of students Friday at the high school.

The search was part of the school district's safety procedure that was put in place last spring, high school principal Mark Burandt said. This was the second time this school year the district conducted a search.

"We view it as routine," Burandt said. "It's similar to a fire drill."

Nothing precipitated the search, he added.

As students entered the building Friday morning, school officials conducted what Burandt termed a "passive search." Students were asked to open their backpacks and unzip their coats. School officials made a quick inspection of the backpacks.

"We didn't pat anyone down," Burandt said.

Superintendent Larry Brown said the district doesn't have any set time for the random search. He was happy with the results, he said.

"We didn't find anything. Everything went well."

Parents were informed of the search via AlertNow e-mails. The AlertNow system notifies parents of emergency and other important school announcements.

"The search went well and students reported that the random passive searches that have recently been implemented have been a positive experience for them," the e-mail said.
