MONROE - City officials hope to have an administrator hired by Sept. 1.
The Monroe Salary and Personnel Committee Tuesday authorized Monroe City Clerk Carol Stamm to contact search firms to recommend people to fill the city administrator position. Stamm will start contacting firms as soon as possible.
Committee Chairman Chuck Schuringa said the city needs to "fast track" the hiring process. The other four members of the committee, Keith Ingwell, Dan Henke, Mike Rivers and Mike Boyce voted in favor of the motion to hire a firm to help with the search.
No firm has been selected. The committee told Stamm to make some inquiries to determine which firm should be hired by the city. The firm will look for candidates for the position and make a recommendation to the city.
Mayor Bill Ross said the city needs to hire an administrator as soon as possible.
"We've been without (an administrator) for about three years," Ross said. "The committee feels the urgency of hiring someone."
Ross said an administrator is needed because the city needs to be run as a business.
"With a $17 million budget, we have to think of the city as a business," he said.
Mayors and alderman come and go, but an administrator can bring stability to a city, he said.
"They can be around longer than a mayor or a council," Ross said.
Ross said any candidate must have experience with budgets and must also have experience with economic planning. He said an administrator needs to be able to bring business to the community.
The committee voted to not include legal duties in the job description for the administrator.
In December, the council selected City Attorney Rex Ewald to become the next administrator. However, the body did not approve offering him a contract.
Monroe has been without an administrator since May 2008.
