MONROE - Schoolchildren in Monroe celebrated the end of the school year on the final day of school Friday.

Students at Parkside Elementary School, for example, gathered at Twining Park for a morning of play in the summer sun.

Although the students' activities varied between using playground equipment, playing a game of kickball or simply talking in groups, nearly all of them agreed on two things: that the end of the school year was exciting and that they wanted to go to the pool.

Fourth-grader Raelynn Rowan said she had few plans other than going to a pool and "hanging out with friends."

Other students were excited for family trips, as well as frequent pool visits.

Fourth-grader Brittany Huerta said she was looking forward to traveling to Chicago to visit her father and, along with her classmate Emily Moser, was excited to visit pools and go swimming.

Moser said she also wanted to make sure she "gets ready for next year" over the summer.

Fellow fourth-grader Brayden Mazahreh said his family was going to visit the Six Flags Great America amusement park in Illinois and would play a lot of sports throughout the summer: "baseball, soccer and football," he said.

Mazahreh's classmate, Carson Menehan, said he intends to visit the pool every day this summer ("it's fun and it's good exercise," he said) and hoped to visit Kalahari Resorts, a water park in Wisconsin Dells.

Menehan also added "I want to hit a home run" to his vacation plans.

Menehan and his classmates have 87 days to get as much pool time as they can before school begins again on Sept. 5.
