School district gauging opinion on weekly early release

MONROE - The public can weigh in on whether the Monroe School District should next year release school one hour early one day per week for staff inservice time, at a special listening session planned for Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The proposal, roughly outlined in a letter sent to parents Thursday afternoon, calls for school releasing early on either Monday or Wednesday. If approved, the change would be for the 2013-14 school year.

In the letter, Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner said district staff would use the hour to collaborate on curriculum and instructional practices and monitor student progress in advance of new Common Core State Standards and more rigorous assessments expected in the 2014-15 school year. No additional time would be added to the school calendar, and the district would still meet instructional time requirements under state law, Hirsbrunner wrote.

The district understands the calendar change would "significantly impact students and their families," and scheduled the listening session to gain input from the community, she wrote. The listening session begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Monroe High School. Those who cannot attend can weigh in by emailing Hirsbrunner at coryhirsbrunner@monroe.k12.wi.us or call 608-325-7135.
