School budget holds steady from April

MONROE - The Monroe school board approved a $28.3 million preliminary 2014-15 budget last week with few changes from the one approved in April.

"There aren't really exciting changes," said Ron Olson, the district's business manager. "We're just making little adjustments."

Most of the adjustments were based on staffing. Olson said there are fluctuations in staff - seen by the recent hirings and resignations - and the district doesn't yet know how much the new staff will impact the budget.

The budgeted deficit for next year is $1.8 million, but "we know it's going to be less," Olson said.

Enrollment is another unknown. Olson said 80 percent of the district's revenues are based on the pupil count, which won't be available until the third week of September.

Using the current estimates, Olson predicted the total tax levy for 2014-15 will be $11,441,725, or a 2.5 percent increase over this year's levy of $11,162,356. The tax rate would be $11.52 per $1,000 of a home's value, compared to $11.24 this year. For example, the owner of a $75,000 home would pay about $864 in school taxes, compared to this year's $843. The owner of a $200,000 home would pay about $2,305, compared to this year's $2,248. These figures are the same as were reported at the school board meeting in April.

The final budget will be approved in October at the district's annual meeting.
