Scam is targeting vets

MONROE - The Green County Veteran's Service Office is warning local veterans of a new email scam.

The veteran's service office has not received any reports of scams in Green County, but are warning of a new email-based phishing scam that is targeting Department of Defense military members, retirees and civilian employees.

According to the Internal Revenue Service website, the email "states that those receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) may be able to obtain additional funds from the IRS," and appears to have come from Defense Finance and Accounting Services.

Email recipients are asked to send various VA and IRS documents containing their personal and financial information.The information on these documents are used by the scammers to commit identity theft.

The veteran's service office reminds residents to avoid giving out personal information through email.
