SOUTH WAYNE - Students at Black Hawk High School have been busy preparing for their upcoming fall production, "Bye, Bye, Birdie."
Set in 1958, the musical satire revolves around rock and roll superstar Conrad Birdie (played by James Rufenacht), who is being drafted into the Army. Complications arise when his agent, Albert Peterson (Connor Moore), stages a publicity stunt on The Ed Sullivan Show in which he will kiss one lucky girl from Sweet Apple, Ohio, Kim Macafee (Katie Place), before he goes. All of this is amidst Peterson's own complications with his secretary and love interest, Rose Martinez (Jorden Rupnow).
Both Birdie and Peterson have obstacles to overcome in their pursuits, which include Kim's parents (played by Thad Brenum and Tierney Cushman); her new steady boyfriend, Hugo Peabody (Grant Roper); and Peterson's own mother, Mae (Kara Bartels). More than 40 additional students make up the rest of the cast and support crew for this production. The musical is directed by Black Hawk staff Danelle Schmid and Sheila Bredeson, with technical support by Don Fulton.
Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and may be purchased at the door.
