MONROE - Two Monroe school district administrators will be getting one-time bonuses of $5,000 each, on top of modest raises for district administrative and exempt staff members approved by the school board at a meeting Monday.

Business Administrator Ron Olson and Director of Pupil Services Joe Monroe earned the rare bonuses by performing work "outside their job descriptions" over the past two years, said District Administrator Rick Waski. He declined to elaborate on the nature of the work, but board treasurer Dan Bartholf referred to the "trials and tribulations we've had" in those two years.

"I don't think it's going to happen again," Bartholf said in response to board member Les Bieneman, who asked if other staff members will be eligible for bonuses and whether the district should have a policy on how they're awarded.

"The leadership that those two provided outside of the normal channels, and still doing everything else, we (the employee relations committee) felt needed to be - honored, I guess, I don't know the right word for that," Bartholf said.

He and Mary Berger, the other present member of the ERC, said they would discuss the possibility of a policy on bonuses.

District administrative staff members, including Olson and Monroe, each will receive a $2,200 pay raise in 2017-18, which is a 2.22 percent increase from last year. The 10 employees affected include principals, associate principals and district office administrators but not Waski.

The board voted 6-1 to approve the administrators' raises, with Cheryl McGuire voting against. She declined to comment on her reason.

Salaries for exempt staff members will increase by 0.88 percent next year, though each of the 10 affected employees are getting a pay raise of at least 2.25 percent, Waski said. The total percent increase is less than the individual increases because of some retirements and resignations, he said.

Exempt staff includes the food service director, school nurses and other managers of support staff. The board approved their raises unanimously.

The raises will cost $22,000 for administrators and almost $5,000 for exempt staff, according to Waski. The total cost of administrative salaries will be $1.01 million in 2017-18, and the total for exempt staff will be about $564,000.

Board president Bob Erb and deputy clerk Amy Bazley were absent Monday.
