MONROE — Attendance in the grandstands peaked on Sunday, July 23 for the Demolition Derby.

In past years, the event had two shows — one in the evening and one at night — with tickets sales highly anticipated. More recently, the event has just one show time with admission to the grandstands included in regular fair admission.

Needless to say, Jake Trickel, an assistant to the event’s promoter, was ready to get the event back to its former glory. With the turnout of 37 different entries in five different classes, plus a little tykes derby, Trickel took it as a step in the right direction.

“The turnout tonight was a real push in the positive direction,” Trickel said. “It was an improvement from the past years — the last five or six years at least. We will keep building on this one.”

The derby brought in veterans, as well as first-timers and some high school students.

“It’s cool to see that there a young kids that want to get out in the shop and get their hands dirty,” Trickel said. “It doesn’t happen very often anymore. It was fun running with them and running against them. They will remember it forever, just like I will.”

The grandstands also hosted the Badger State Tractor Pull on Thursday, with the local truck and tractor pull on Friday. On Saturday, there were antique tractor pulls with ATV racing in the evening.
