MONROE - A Rockford man was killed Thursday afternoon near Monticello after his SUV crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a semitrailer.

The man was extricated from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene by a MedFlight doctor, according to the Green County Sheriff's Office. His name is being withheld pending notification of family.

A 911 call at 4:49 p.m. brought deputies and first responders to the crash scene on Wisconsin 69 just north of Hefty Road, Town of Washington.

"We had witnesses render aid immediately, and they did what they could," Sheriff Mark Rohloff said.

The SUV was northbound when it crossed into the southbound lane "for no apparent reason" and hit a southbound Hobby Lobby semi head-on, Rohloff said.

The semi driver and passenger, both of Oklahoma, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The crash pushed the semi into the ditch, ripped its hood, tore off the front driver-side wheels and mangled the driver-side door.

The SUV landed down the road in the opposite ditch, with severe damage isolated to the front driver side.

Green County EMS, the Monticello Fire and Police Departments, Wisconsin State Patrol Reconstruction Unit and MedFlight also responded to the accident scene.

The accident shut down Wis. 69 for several hours Thursday evening between County C and County NN.

This is Green County's fourth traffic fatality of 2015.
