NEW GLARUS - A ground breaking Oct. 7 commemorated another milestone for the Retirement Campus located in New Glarus.

The Glarner Lodge will be the first residential care apartment complex (RCAC) located within New Glarus and inside the New Glarus Home Retirement Campus.

The new addition will include 26 assisted living units, for up to two people per unit.

Construction of the units is expected to begin immediately and has an early fall 2010 completion date.

"The addition of Glarner Lodge on Retirement Campus will compliment our other services, which currently include nursing home and rehabilitation and senior housing in the form of apartment and duplexes," said Roger L. Goepfert, executive director of the New Glarus Home.

The New Glarus Home currently operates and manages a 50-unit RCAC, St. Clare Friedensheim in Monroe, in partnership with the Monroe Clinic and St. John's United Church of Christ.

A RCAC provides 24-hour supervision of residents, meal programs, activities, medication management and daily care needs, all within a resident's apartment setting.

Financing for the project is provided by Wisconsin Health and Education Facility Authority, which will authorize a bank qualified tax-exempt loan. Local banks will participate in the loan.

According to Goepfert, about 11 universal health care employees will be hired for the new facility. Universal health care employees hold a certified nursing assistant certificate, and will be assisting residents with daily needs. Glarner Lodge will be hiring additional support staff, such as a dietitian.

Should the first phase of Glarner Lodge "go well and a demand for more" units arises, Goepfert said, additional units would be forthcoming.

Donations have been received for the project, and an invitation for other public participation is encouraged. Donations are tax deductible.

The New Glarus Home, operating since 1996, has a relationship with the United Church of Christ and is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation.
