MONROE — County officials in this area said turnout in the recent election was pretty good, though not spectacular and that despite new voting rules and some confusion around them, the Aug. 9 contest was successful.
Clerks here and across Wisconsin were set to meet to canvass the results in the days after the election.
“Turnout was good,” said Green County Clerk Arianna Voegeli, who estimated turnout this time in the 36% range. “Overall, we’re very pleased with how the election went.”
In Lafayette County, turnout was estimated at 30%, still not bad and “definitely a little bigger than previous partisan primaries,” said County Clerk Carla Jacobson.
Voegli said the only thing close to a glitch in this year’s Green County primary was when workers discovered that most of the 22 locations that submit ballots could not transmit them electronically.
“We were able to get two (township results) to go in and then it was a brick wall after that,” she said.
As a result, election workers had to drive all of the remaining, individual data drives into Green County to have the data extracted manually into the system. The two towns that submit on the Dane County system — Brooklyn and Belleville — simply called them in as they usually do, officials said.
Related to the new election rules, anecdotally at least there seems to still be issues with people trying to bring the ballots of others to the polling place, according to Voegeli. At the beginning of July, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that most ballot boxes are not legal; and a person is not allowed submit another voter’s ballot in person.
As a result, the said there were at least two incidents of bringing in the ballots of others in both the Town of Sylvester and the Town of Clarno. She further illustrated such a dilemma clerks face in an interview with a Madison Television station, WMTV, published online:
“If you have a voter that is bringing his and his wife’s ballot in, and the clerk has to say, ‘I can’t accept your wife’s ballot; she has to bring that in herself,’ and she’s like, ‘well I know that’s Joe and Mary they live three houses down from me, why can’t I accept this ballot,’” said Voegeli.
Clerks across the state say it will take some time for the public to learn all of the new election-related rules and that voter outreach and education efforts in the months ahead could still help.
In the only locally contested Green County race, incumbent coroner Monica Hack defeated challenger Amy Jo Walter with 1,789 votes to Walter’s 1,430.
Overall turnout was expected to be down slightly across the state for partisan primaries once the clerks canvass all of the final results. Turnout is expected to pick up for the general election with closely watched governor and senate races.
“We will be ready,” said Jacobson.
