Residents push for memorial

MONROE - Communities across the country have sent young men to fight in the cause of freedom to the United States.

Some of them returned home to pick up with their lives and move forward. Some did not.

Throughout the country, communities have memorials to the veterans who served the United States, but there isn't a Green County memorial.

A group of residents want to change that.

Donna Douglas, Monroe, is one of the people who would like to see a memorial to Green County veterans. The memorial will honor Green County residents who served their country as well as those who still serve their country.

"There's no other memorial in Green County for the county's veterans," Douglas said. "You almost have to hang your head that we haven't had a memorial before."

A group of about 20 people have started to look at the possibility of a memorial at the Pleasant View Park, located at the intersection of Wisconsin 81 and County N.

In 2004, the Green County Board of Supervisors designated an area for a memorial; then, last year the tank located at the agriculture building was moved to the park to make room for the Green County Justice Center.

"We have the tank. Hopefully in the future we will add a helicopter," Douglas said.

There are plans for a memory garden, a brick walkway, benches and additional landscaping.

Anyone interested in helping organize the park and raising funds can attend an organization meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Monroe American Legion Post No. 84, 1627 12th Ave.

There will be an election for president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Brats and hamburgers will be served.
