MONROE - The Director of Green County Tourism is asking the public to beware of possible scammers who may be trying to use the organization's name as part of a scam.

According to Director of Green County Tourism Noreen Rueckert, an entity not affiliated with the Green County Visitor Guide has been seeking donations on behalf of that organization.

Rueckert reached out to several community institutions in recent days warning the public of an ongoing scam in which telemarketers have been seeking donations

"If you receive a call from someone saying they are selling ads for the Green County Visitor Guide, and that person isn't me (Noreen Rueckert) - then it is not legit," according to Rueckert.

The scam has been "going on a while," according to Rueckert. She said she had found numerous references to the campaign online.

The Times, Tuesday, called a telemarketing/advertising business called "Hometown Productions," which had been listed by Rueckert as possibly being involved in soliciting advertising on behalf of Green County Tourism.

An associate at "Hometown Productions" said the business has been operating since 1975 and they are working with clients in Green County that are not connected to any telemarketing sales related to Green County Tourism. The associate said a statement from Hometown Productions corporate office would be forthcoming.

Rueckert said one of the potential scammers was called "Universal Adcom," and that business was named in a warning issued by the Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana recently.

Phone numbers for these scams have come from Arlington, Texas, and Peoria, Illinois, according to the Better Business Bureau of Northern Indiana.

To report a potential scam, people can always call local law enforcement. Other information can be found through the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau at 1-800-273-1002. Public telephone hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
