Resident foils burglars' escape

BRODHEAD - Local police departments don't promote people taking the law into their own hands. That didn't stop Susan Johnson on Thursday morning.

Johnson was at her neighbor's house around 11:30 a.m. Thursday when she noticed an older, red, Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck leaving her garage at W1084 Pedee Road in Spring Grove township.

Johnson contacted the Green County Sheriff's Department as she began to drive after the truck. She kept in contact with the sheriff's department, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said, as the truck went south on County T and into Rock County.

She relayed road names to the dispatcher and told the dispatcher there were two people in the truck. Johnson was told she should stop following the truck for safety reasons but replied that she kept a safe distance between her vehicle and the truck.

Green County notified sheriff's departments in Rock and Winnebago counties and around noon the truck was stopped. Both occupants were taken into custody. They were about 12 miles from Johnson's home when they were arrested.

Phillip K. Saeger, 56, and Timothy L. Garland, 26, both of Beloit, were arrested for burglary and for probation warrants.

Roderick said a purse, a camcorder and a camera were stolen from Johnson's residence.

Johnson should be commended for her actions, Roderick said.

"Johnson thought and acted quickly and by doing so delivered the suspects to the police," Roderick said.

The dispatchers also should receive credit for working with other jurisdictions in response to the incident, he added.

Roderick said there have been numerous daytime robberies over the past several weeks in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Green County detectives are working with detectives from other departments to determine if the two men arrested Thursday were involved with other burglaries, Roderick said.

Saeger and Garland remain jailed pending a court appearance.
