MONROE - The Green County Veterans Service Office reminds area veterans about some important changes to the Wisconsin G.I. Bill.
The Wisconsin G.I. Bill should not be confused with the completely separate Federal G.I. Bill.
The Wisconsin G.I. Bill tuition remission program provides a waiver of tuition and fees at University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Technical College System schools. Eligible veterans and certain dependents, such as spouses and children of disabled veterans, rated 30 percent or higher by the VA, may receive the greater of eight semesters or 128 credits for technical, undergraduate, professional or graduate study. For veterans, there is no expiration date for benefits.
The new changes to the Wisconsin G.I. Bill allows for eligibility for veterans that did not join the military from the State of Wisconsin but are Wisconsin residents now, and have been for five years. This new change applies to the veteran only and does not extend to spouses or children of disabled veterans. The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs indicates this program will be available for the fall 2013 educational semester. There are additional criteria for this benefit that have to be submitted to the state.
