MADISON - The South Central Library System, which includes the Monroe Public Library, will receive almost $2.3 million in state aid during 2009.
The South Central Library System includes libraries in Adams, Columbia, Dane, Green, Portage, Sauk and Wood counties.
In total, Wisconsin library systems will share almost $16.8 million in state aid. The aid payments help libraries share resources to provide more services while reducing duplication, according to the Department of Public Instruction, which administers the library aid.
Library systems use the funds according to plans developed and adopted by regional library boards to meet the needs of each public library system area. Library system services include making sure residents have complete access to public library materials; coordinating the loan of library materials among participating libraries; providing training and continuing education for library staff; and coordinating cooperative library technology projects.
The Southwest Wisconsin Library System, which includes Lafayette County, will receive $406,188. Other counties represented in the system are Crawford, Grant, Iowa and Richland.
The only system that received more than South Central was the Milwaukee County Federated Library System, which is set to receive almost $3 million.
Library systems received the first of two aid payments in November.
