MONROE - On Monday, the City of Monroe Public Safety Committee authorized Fire Chief Daryl Rausch to advertise for and create an eligibility list of paid on-call firefighters, and to fill vacant positions.
Rausch said the Fire Department has five vacant positions due to retirement or people moving. He expects one to three more vacancies by the end of the year.
Rausch said he will follow the past hiring method of creating an eligibility list of about 12 people. The list should be good for 24 months before having to go through the hiring process again, Rausch said.
In other business, the committee:
Approved the Monroe Main Street Chili Cookoff/Oktoberfest special events application. Police Chief Fred Kelley said the Oct. 4 event will take place on the Square. A beer garden will be located on the east side of the inside lanes from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Recommended to Salary & Personnel Committee to hire a replacement dispatcher. Kelley said the hire will replace a retiree and bring the number of dispatchers to five.
Rausch asked the committee at their next meeting to discuss and possibly take action on not turning off the traffic lights at the intersection of Wisconsin 69 and Eighth Street during overnight hours. The intersection is "getting to be a problem," with a number of serious accidents, Rausch said.
