MONROE - Despite a little rain early in the day, people turned out to Twining Park in Monroe on Saturday for annual Fourth of July events.

"Wet," Monroe Parks and Recreation Supervisor Marge Klinzing joked as she described the day.

Klinzing said the weather might have kept some away, but people decided to come to the park.

"It's a good crowd. The games are under the trees and the softball and volleyball games are still going on," she said.

There usually are between 300 and 400 kids who take part in the games every year, she said.

Possibly the most popular game at the park was "Go Fish," sponsored by the Sons of Norway. Kids tried to toss a ping-pong ball in a fish bowl to win a goldfish. Some walked away with more than one.

Aaron Meier, 13, Monroe, won four fish.

"I'll put them in a bowl and see how long I can take care of them," he said, as he held up the plastic bag to show off the fish.

It wasn't the first time he took goldfish home from the park. He estimated he's won 20 goldfish since he first came to the park to celebrate the Fourth of July nine years ago.

Besides the chance to win goldfish, kids took their chances to win other prizes at a bean-bag toss, a football throw and a fishing game.

There also were plenty of food tents for anyone who wanted something to eat.
