SHULLSBURG - The Department of Interior announced this week the Bureau of Indian Affairs is formally beginning to gather information to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Lac du Flambeau tribe's proposed casino project in Shullsburg.

There will be a public scoping meeting on the proposed casino at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Shullsburg High School, 444 N. Judgement St.

In March, the tribe submitted a fee-to-trust land application for gaming on property it owns in Shullsburg.

Before any decision can be made on the application, the EIS must be completed.

The tribe shared its plans for the facility at a public information meeting in April in Shullsburg. The project includes the development of a gaming facility, hotel, restaurant and retail facilities, entertainment and convention space, recreational vehicle park, sportsman's club, maintenance facilities and surface parking.

Tribal Chairman Tom Maulson said in a news release this week that he is pleased at the progress of the project, but added that the tribe still has a ways to go to complete the facility.

The meeting Aug. 15 "is a good opportunity for the public to speak their mind, and we will be addressing all of their ideas," Maulson added.

Written comments on the scope of the EIS or implementation of the proposal may be sent directly to the BIA. Mail written comments to Diane Rosen, Regional Director, Midwest Regional Office, Bureau of Indian Affairs, 5600 West American Blvd., Suite 500, Bloomington, Minn. 55437. The fax number is 612-713-4401. Written comments must arrive by Aug. 30.
