DARLINGTON - A Mineral Point man was sentenced Tuesday in Lafayette County Circuit Court to one year and eight months in prison for a drunken driving crash from August 2015.

Stephen D. Sporle, 45, formerly of South Wayne, pleaded guilty to Class H felony charges of operating while intoxicated and operating with a prohibited blood-alcohol concentration. Both are fourth-offense convictions.

He's sentenced to three-and-a-half years on extended supervision after prison, with conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores. His driver's license is revoked three years, followed by three years with a conditional ignition-interlock device.

Court records show Sporle has OWI convictions from March 2010 in Iowa County, February 2012 in Grant County, November 2012 in Iowa County and June 2015 in Iowa County.

The court granted a motion from Sporle's defense attorney that the November 2012 conviction be disregarded for purposes of sentencing in this latest case.

The case stems from a crash Aug. 22, 2015, near Darlington.

Sporle was out on a $3,000 signature bond in his second Iowa County OWI case when he crashed his car on Red Rock Road in the Town of Darlington. He lost control of his 1998 Honda Accord on a curve, went off the road and hit multiple trees, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department. Deputies found open intoxicants in the car.
