MONROE - The Monroe American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 84 will distribute bright red poppies on Poppy Day, Friday, May 18.

Contributions to the Poppy Program are designated to benefit veterans by raising funds for hospitalized and needy veterans and their families. In Wisconsin, there are three veterans hospitals located in Madison, Milwaukee and Tomah. Camp American Legion, near Lake Tomahawk, is available to veterans who need therapy and rest. The veterans who use these facilities also receive personal items, treats, stationary, tote bags and postage.

The Christmas Gift Shop in December also receives benefits from the poppy proceeds. The hospitalized veterans can choose Christmas gifts for their families. The gifts are wrapped and shipped at no cost to the veterans.

Headquarters from Poppy Day will be at the Monroe American Legion Post home, 1627 12th Ave. Poppy Day committee members are JoAnn Schwitz, Gladys Schild and Frances Wells.
