DARLINGTON — The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office is seeking tips in the theft of a new car from a rural Shullsburg residence with an estimated value of $60,000.
The 2018 Dodge Charger sedan was stolen at about 2 a.m. Wednesday from a residence on Silverthorn Road and remained missing as of Thursday morning, according to Sheriff Reg Gill.
The car is bright red, has a strip of yellow tape along the bottom front spoiler and only 1,100 miles on the odometer.
A neighbor last saw it headed westbound on Silverthorn Road.
“It shocks me that we haven’t found it yet,” Gill said. “It’s almost like a walking billboard. It’s a flashy car. You’re not going to just drive one around not have people notice it. It’s not like a gray minivan.”
Most vehicles reported stolen are quickly ditched by the thief, he added. This theft appears to be different.
One of the first calls deputies made in investigating the theft was to a Dodge dealership to see if the car had a built-in GPS system that could be used to locate it.
“Unfortunately, the owner of this vehicle did not have that program,” Gill said.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 608-776-4870 or submit an anonymous tip via Lafayette County Crime Stoppers.
